How to choose your first tattoo — and not regret it
A first tattoo is always exciting — and usually you have more questions than answers: which style to pick, where to place it, how much it hurts, and whether you'll regret it later. I've answered the most common questions from my clients — here's what actually matters.
1. Start with an idea, not a picture
The biggest mistake is showing up with someone else's reference and just "copying" it. A tattoo that means something to you personally — a symbol, a moment, a character, a quote — stays meaningful for years. A borrowed picture can start feeling old within a year.
Ask yourself: why this one? If you have an answer — go ahead. If not — wait.
2. Pick a style that fits your idea
Tattoo style is the language your idea speaks. Here are the most common options for a first tattoo:
- Graphic / blackwork — black-and-white, crisp, ages very well
- Minimalism — thin lines, clean look. Important: needs the right placement, tiny details can "blur" over time
- New School — bright and playful, for those who want something bold
- Realism — a demanding style that needs a decent size for the detail to shine
Not sure what to pick — read about the styles, check the fine line article, or message me and I'll help.
3. Placement matters as much as the design
Some spots are basically unusable for tattooing: sole of the foot, sides of the fingers, palms — the pigment just won't hold there. Best spots for a first tattoo:
- Forearm — always visible, heals well
- Shoulder / deltoid — classic, neutral placement
- Shoulder blade / back — a large area for detail
- Calf — holds well, relatively low pain
4. Size matters
A small tattoo with tiny details isn't always better. In 5–10 years the fine bits merge. If the idea is complex — do it bigger and clean, not small and blurry. Size and complexity also drive the price.
I always recommend the optimal size for your specific idea and placement — it's part of our consultation. Worried about pain? That's also very individual.
5. Preparing for the session
A detailed checklist is in the dedicated article on preparing for a session. Briefly:
- Eat before the session — don't come on an empty stomach
- No alcohol for at least 24 hours beforehand
- Wear something comfortable that gives access to the area
- For long sessions — bring water and a snack
After the session, proper aftercare is half the win. Questions about healing, allergies, contraindications — see the health article and the FAQ.
