Tattoo cover-up: when it's possible and how to choose the design
Don't like your old tattoo anymore? No problem. A cover-up is a full artistic project — done right, it gives a fantastic result.
When can a tattoo be covered?
- The tattoo is fully healed (at least 3 months after the last session)
- Skin is free of inflammation and scars at the tattoo site
- The old tattoo has faded enough — or can be covered with darker pigment
A fresh tattoo can't be covered immediately — the skin needs time to fully recover.
Which style works best for a cover-up?
Key rule: the new design must be at least 30% larger than the old one and use darker tones where you need to hide unwanted elements. Style overview — in the tattoo styles article.
- Blackwork, tribal — the most effective cover-up, dark fills hide everything
- Realism with a dark background — good for masking lettering and simple shapes
- Fine line — only works for very faded old tattoos
- Flowers, botany — a popular choice for covering unwanted lettering
Can lettering be covered?
Yes, but with caveats. Lettering is one of the harder cases, especially if it's dark and heavy. Often you need a larger design with a dense background. Come for a consultation — we'll assess it together. Pricing by complexity — see this article.
What about laser removal?
A few sessions of laser removal before a cover-up dramatically expand your options for the new design. After partial removal, you can do a tattoo that wouldn't be possible otherwise.
