Aftercare
Tattoo aftercare — the full guide
How well a tattoo heals depends not only on the artist — but on you. Proper aftercare in the first weeks directly affects how the tattoo will look a year later. Here's everything you need to know.
Two healing approaches: film or ointment
After the session I either apply a protective film or recommend an ointment with medical pads. The choice depends on a few factors:
- Film — convenient for smaller pieces without dense packing. For the first 2–4 days you don't need to do anything — just leave it on. After that, we bring in a healing ointment with panthenol.
- Ointment + pads — better for large work with dense black or colour, and in hot weather when the film won't hold. The pads absorb discharge and excess ink.
What NOT to do during healing
- 🚫 Steam room, sauna, pool, open water — infection risk
- 🚫 The beach — even without swimming: sand carries pathogens (details — tattoos in summer)
- 🚫 Tanning bed and direct sun — they break down pigment, especially on colour tattoos
- 🚫 Heavy training at the gym — excess sweating disrupts healing
- 🚫 Picking scabs — that's tearing pigment out, it leaves gaps
- 🚫 Alcohol in the first days — thins the blood and slows regeneration
Normal symptoms during healing
Don't panic if in the first days you see:
- Swelling and redness around the tattoo — normal up to 3–5 days
- Itching — the skin is regenerating, that's a good sign
- Peeling and scabs — the pigment is setting
- Slight temperature rise — especially with large work
If the swelling doesn't go down, pus appears, or your temperature is above 38 °C — see a doctor. On tattoos and health (contraindications, allergies) — separate article. Getting ready for your first tattoo? Definitely read the session prep.
How long a tattoo heals
2–3 weeks — surface healing: the skin stops peeling, itching fades.
2–3 months — full healing deep in the dermis. Only then do you see the final result.
How to keep your tattoo bright for years
After healing, the tattoo needs ongoing care:
- Moisturising — dry skin makes pigment dull. Apply cream or oil regularly.
- Sun protection — in summer, SPF 50 on the tattoo area is a must. Sun is colour's main enemy.
- Gentle exfoliation — 1–2 times a week removes dead skin, the pigment looks crisper.
