Where tattoos hurt: an honest placement ranking
Pain is the first thing people ask about before a first session. The answer depends on placement, your personal pain threshold, and the artist's technique. Here's an honest ranking from our studio.
🔴 Most painful zones
- Ribs — bony surface, thin skin, every breath is felt
- Inner elbow and knee — lots of nerve endings
- Spine — especially lower back and neck
- Groin and armpit — sensitive skin, close to lymph nodes
- Feet and hands — bones close to the surface
🟡 Medium pain
- Forearm — outer side is comfortable, inner more sensitive
- Shoulder and deltoid — soft zone, one of the best options for a first tattoo
- Calf — front is more painful than the back
- Collarbone — depends on size, the bone is felt
- Upper back
- Thigh
- Calf muscle
🟢 Most comfortable placements
- Outer shoulder and forearm — fleshy zone, ideal for a first tattoo
- Inner forearm — the skin here is softer and more sensitive than outside, but sitting through 2–3 hours is manageable without major issues.
- Buttocks — a zone with plenty of tissue; due to nerve distribution the session can feel a bit unusual, though not critically painful.
How to reduce the pain?
- Eat well 1–2 hours before the session
- Avoid alcohol and coffee for 24 hours before
- Sleep well the night before
- Use a numbing cream (coordinate with the artist)
- Breathe evenly and don't tense up — it genuinely helps
